Additional Information on Mosquito Spray Applications

VDCI is the current provider for mosquito spray services. The term spraying vs fogging is interchangeable though also misused.

Technically, "spraying" is a cold aerosolized Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spray application and "fogging" is a thermal smoke application that creates a very dense cloud or "fog." The size of the spray/fog particle is different. Thermal smoke particles (fog) are 1-2 microns in diameter, whereas the ULV cold aerosol spray is concentrated in the range of 8-30 microns. ULV spraying is much safer, extremely efficient, and environmentally friendly. The application rate is 1 to 1.5 fluid ounces per acre. The "spray" cloud is not as dense as the thermal "fog" that may cause dangerous visual impairment to drivers on streets, particularly at intersections. VDCI conducts a ULC spray application of water-based insecticide and, basically, the water based is more transparent/translucent than an oil-based spray. Thus, one may not visibly see the spray application. The chemical used is Chemical: Aqua Perm-X UL. The ULV truck mounted spray is applied in the US during the evening or within one to two hours leading up to and after dawn (sunrise) when mosquitoes are flying and most active. VDCI will conduct spraying in the evenings when notified. Approximately 24 miles are treated in the city utilizing over 10 gallons. As an interesting side note, it is suggested that anyone questioning the application could place a white sheet on the lawn the evening of a spray application; then see what is found on the sheet in the morning. Could be interesting!

If you have questions about the application process, feel free to contact City Hall.
